Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, opened India’s first College of Nursing which started the graduate nursing course in 1946. However, the Lower Grade Nursing Course for girls began in 1909. Back in the early days, parents were hesitant to send their daughters for training. The nursing pioneers, along with CMC’s founder Dr Ida. S. Scudder used to visit schools throughout South India to persuade girls and their parents to choose a career in nursing.
Today, nursing courses in CMC are much sought after. About 400 BSc nursing Students, 100 Post basic BSc nursing Students and 58 MSc nursing Students and 30 post-diploma in various nursing specialties students study in our college. Admission is based on all-India written examinations and interviews. 100 students are admitted into the B.Sc nursing, 50 into the Post basic BSc nursing, and 29 into the MSc nursing programme each year and the course is affiliated with Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University. The annual intake for Diploma Nursing is 100 and it is recognized by the Indian Nursing Council. Various scholarships are available for needy students. At CMC, nursing education and ward work are closely integrated giving enhanced standards of patient care and the highest quality of theoretical and hands-on education. At CMC, nursing education and clinical work are closely integrated giving enhanced standards of patient care and the highest quality of theoretical and hands-on education. It has been given a five-star rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of the University Grants Commission and is a study centre for the national Ph.D. consortium. In December 2009, the centenary year for nursing education in CMC Vellore, the College of Nursing moved out of the main hospital premises to a sprawling new campus in Kagithapattarai, very close to the hospital. The Nursing Campus includes the College, and offices, spacious classrooms. Medical-Surgical the departments of Nursing foundation, Medical Surgical Nursing, administrative and Maternity Nursing. It also houses the administrative digital state-of-the-art library, a chapel, surrounding airy courtyards and a spacious Nursing Students hostel with UG and PG Blocks. The College serves as a resource centre for nursing and midwifery development and for educating and training Nursing teachers in India. With CMAI Nurses’ League, the College works to raise Nursing education standards in mission hospitals. The College creates a nurturing environment and, to this end, along with academic and clinical excellence, the spiritual development of students is emphasised through retreats, Bible classes and community worship on Sundays so that the institution’s motto is internalised.
