The department of Continuing Nursing Education and Research, was founded by Dr. Punitha Ezhilarasu, the then Dean of College of Nursing who also became the first Head of the CNE Department. Established in January 17, 2005, the department is engaged in the organization of short term courses and workshops, preparation of educational materials, publication of the journal, activities related to National Consortium for PhD and offering research and scientific writing consultation to faculty.

The objectives of the department are to:

  • Provide innovative educational programmes and training opportunities for nurses through short term courses.
  • Enhance clinical competencies through clinical skill update workshop, refresher courses and advanced training.
  • Encourage nurses to develop skills in conducting clinical as well as collaborative research.
  • Promote dissemination of research findings and research utilization through publication of Indian Journal of Continuing Nursing Education (IJCNE) and research bulletin.

Publication of journal – Indian Journal of Continuing Nursing Education (IJCNE)

Indian Journal of Continuing Nursing Education, a publication of College of Nursing, Christian Medical College, Vellore, since the year 2000, is a peer-reviewed, UGC approved, semi-annual journal that publishes concept, clinical and research articles in the field of nursing. It is indexed with the Indian Citation Index and listed in the Index Copernicus Masterlist. The journal ISSN number is 2230 – 7354.  The journal follows a rigorous double blinded peer review process with editors and reviewers from India and abroad. The journal aims towards promoting continuing education and professional development for nurses in all health care settings and in all domains such as education, research and clinical practice. It is being published uninterrupted for the past 18 years.

It is a print + online journal (Print ISSN: 2230-7354, Online ISSN: 2666-8246) and full text is available online at http://www.ijcne.org. The journal allows free access (Open Access) to its contents and permits authors to self-archive final accepted version of the articles on any OAI-compliant institutional / subject-based repository.

CNE courses, workshops and conferences

The department actively disseminates nursing knowledge and offers training opportunities for nurses from within the institution and from different states through various workshops, short term courses, distance education courses, and national conferences. The programmes are accredited by the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council.

Preparation of educational materials

The department also involves in the preparation of educational materials and has brought out handbooks on research methodology, manuscript preparation and implementing PBL in nursing education. It also has developed DVD’s on professional communication skills and enterostomal care.

National Consortium for PhD Nursing

The department is dynamically involved in conducting all the activities of National Consortium for PhD in Nursing. College of Nursing is one of the centers for National Consortium for PhD in Nursing. Research and scientific writing consultation

Expert consultation is offered for the intramural faculty on the last Friday of every month for research and manuscript preparation. Research methodology short term courses are organized for faculty and postgraduate students. Faculty of the department are involved in ongoing researches.
