MEDICAL NURSING DEPARTMENT


The Department of Medical Nursing comprises general medical wards, an Isolation ward, Medical Intensive care units, and peripheral services namely the Schell eye hospital, Low-Cost Effective Care Unit and Shalom family medicine. The medical nursing department hosts 216 beds including 38 ICU beds and 23 isolation beds with 5 medical units. It caters to patients with acute medical illnesses, infectious diseases, drug overdoses and poisoning, Multimorbidity with Communicable and Non-communicable diseases, Lifestyle diseases, and Geriatric patients. The nurse managers/ faculty are responsible to ensure that quality patient care is provided in a systematic manner with the policies and protocols of the institution. The faculty and the tutors ensure and facilitate students' learning experiences in the clinical areas. The faculty is the resource person in the workshop and national and international conferences.


Services
In patients services of medical patients with critical illness which has level one to three care including intensive care facilities.

1. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
2. Competency-based training program for the staff nurses

5. In-house workshops two per year for the nursing staff with 6-7 batches
6. Competency training and induction of new staff nurses within the department
7. Mandatory topics for staff awareness on policies and protocols related to patient care


WORKSHOPS
1. Geriatric workshop is conducted annually along with the department of Geriatrics to commemorate the International Day of the older adults for the nursing staff
2. Critical care workshop is conducted annually along with the department of critical care division and surgical nursing department
4. In-house workshops are conducted twice a year in coordination with Nursing Services for nursing staff every year focusing on the basics of medical nursing skills and practice Workshop related to infectious diseases is conducted annually along with the Department of Infectious Diseases.


OUTREACH SERVICES
• School health programs on snake bite awareness on the world snake day
• School health program on prevention of accidental poisoning and first aid management
• Industrial workers' awareness program on chemical safety and first aid management
• Medical Camps, Counselling, Awareness programs on first aid management of snake bite, ill effects of alcohol, and smoking cessation
• Public vaccine camps during the COVID pandemic

PERIPHERAL SERVICES


SCHELL EYE HOSPITAL
• The eye hospital was named Mary Taber Schell in memory of Mr. Schell Taber's wife Mary. It was started in the year 1902 as a general hospital and changed exclusively for eye services in 1925. The services rendered are outpatient, inpatient, and outreach. Special clinics are conducted on different days: Retina, Cornea, Oculoplasty, Glaucoma, Septic, Low vision, contact lens, and vision screening for children with cerebrovascular impairment and premature babies. Nurses mastered and are privileged to administer peribulbar blocks for ocular surgeries.


• LOW COST-EFFECTIVE CARE SERVICES ( LCECU)
LCECU is functioning since 1982 with the mission to be a witness to the healing ministry of Christ among the poor of Vellore by providing effective, affordable, and accessible health care through the principles of family medicine and community-oriented primary care. Services are rendered to an urban population of around 10,000. LCECU offers general OPD & IP services, and Outreach services. Special services rendered on different days: ENT, Pediatric surgery, RHD clinic, Child Adolescent Psychiatry, Adult Psychiatry, Endocrine, General surgery, Alcohol deaddiction counseling, antenatal clinic, DMGV (Diabetes Mellitus Group Visit- Educator), and Dental Consultation


• SHALOM FAMILY MEDICINE CENTRE
Prince manor clinic started in the year 2007 and was renamed Shalom Family Medicine Centre in 2014. It functions with the aim of providing a health care facility for the Vellore population with an extension from main hospital services to avoid delay in receiving health care services. It functions with the intention of serving the mission. It provides outpatient services with evidence-based clinical practice.


OUTREACH SERVICES


Schell eye hospital
• Eye camps are focused on the needy people in the Vellore district: screening for cataracts, and correcting refractive errors.
• Mass health education on various aspects of eye health to school children, volunteers, and sponsors.
Low Cost-Effective Care Unit
• Periodic home visits, conducting clinics, mass education, and life skill education for young adults.
• School education provided with the – philosophy of: ‘catch them young’ focusing on injury prevention, life skill, and health education on various health-related aspects.
• During the COVID crisis, needy patients are being provided home-based COVID kits, and oxygen concentrators and other public were provided with home-based essentials along with NGO's contribution.
• The COVID vaccination program in the hospital setting as well as in the community was carried out at free of cost.

• Special awareness exhibition stalls, quiz competitions, workshops, videos, puppet shows, medical camps, online awareness classes, and factory/industrial visits are conducted on these special days based on the theme of the year

OPHTALMOLOGY DEPARTMENT


The department specializes in the supervision of care of patients who get admitted with diverse medical conditions in their 4 wards, an isolation ward, and 2 medical intensive care units and also specializes in the care of patients with ophthalmological disorders and also offers patient-specific holistic care at the Low-Cost Effective Care Unit. The faculty at the department organizes and actively participates in multiple eye screening programs and World Diabetic Day celebrations.


The department’s special focus is on caring for patients with geriatric problems, rheumatologic disorders, and infectious diseases apart from general medical disorders. The faculties are also involved in facilitating the implementation of screening and educational programs on specific days like International day of older people, World AIDS Day, and World TB Day. Faculties also are the resource personnel in institutional workshops on ‘Fundamentals of Critical Care’ and ‘Nutrition’. The faculties also cater to student learning by offering a diverse spectrum of clinical experiences to various levels of students.
