Preamble:
This short term course in Chemotherapy is designed to prepare registered nurses to be specially trained in administration of chemotherapy and management of patients on chemotherapy. Nurses undergoing this course will be able to function as chemotherapy nurses in hospitals and day care chemotherapy units.
She/ He may also function as chemotherapy nurse coordinator in tertiary care cancer centres.

Objectives of the Course: The course participants will be able to

  • Understand the risk factors, biology, cancer development, diagnosis and prevention of cancer
  • Classify the cytotoxic drugs used in cancer treatment
  • Follow the safe handling principles of cytotoxic drugs
  • Calculate chemotherapeutic drugs accurately
  • Reconstitute and administer chemotherapeutic drugs
  • Identify and intervene anaphylaxis, extravasation and spillage of cytotoxic drugs during chemotherapy administration
  • Manage regimen related toxicities and provide nursing care using nursing process
  • Explain the targeted therapies that are being used in cancer management
  • Describe the Central Venous Access Devices and its care
  • Demonstrate the Central Venous Access Device dressing
  • Counsel patients and families on home care and follow up after chemotherapy administration
  • Provide comprehensive, evidence based and individualized nursing care to patients undergoing chemotherapy incorporating the acquired knowledge and skills

Eligibility Criteria
Nurses with GNM, B.Sc or M.Sc qualification

Organization of Course
Duration: This is a short term course of 4 weeks duration.
Total Hours: 180 hrs
Hours allotted for theory: 60 hours
20 hours x 2 weeks = 40 hours
Online learning through videos, scenarios & Assignments (completed in module) =20 hours
Hours allotted for clinical practice: 120 hours
Onsite clinical practice= 100 hours
Onsite skill demonstration, case presentation, drug presentation = 20 hours

Criteria for Certification in Chemotherapy:

  1. 75% marks scored in theory and 80% in practical exam
  2. 100% attendance during the course
  3. Satisfactory completion of the log book during the course

A one-time non–refundable fee of Rs. 21,500/- (Corporate & Private), * Rs. 14,500/- ( Mission & Government) + 18% GST has to be paid after getting the selection communication from CMC.
