Psychiatric Nursing

Home:
The Department of Psychiatry is located in a quiet, naturally wooded environment that is 8kms away from the main CMC campus, started by Dr Florence Nichols, a Canadian missionary in 1945. This is the first of its kind, to formally admit the family along with the
patients. The department has 122 inpatient beds across 5 wards (Private, Annexe, Low-Cost Private Ward, Nambikkai Nilayam and Acute Care Room).

Services:
Family centred care
The concept of family-based psychiatric nursing care is a distinctive service of the department. The members of the family are involved in the planning and implementation of the holistic nursing care that incorporates psychological, physical, social and spiritual aspects of care.

Electroconvulsive therapy
Twice a week modified Electroconvulsive therapy is given to patients. The nurses are trained to prepare and assist with the procedures.

Acute care room
There is a 12 bedded Acute Care Room that provides 24 hours observation, monitoring and nursing care for patients in need of emergency services. The nurses are trained to provide competent and comprehensive nursing care to patients during emergencies.

Multidisciplinary team approach
The members of the mental health care team are involved in the care of the patient, meet once a week, discuss the progress and plan for further management. Nurses contribute towards the planning and implementation of patient's care during the weekly patients
conference.

Special Days
The following special days are observed by the department to create awareness among the public on the promotion of mental health, early identification, and treatment of psychiatric disorders.

3. World Alzheimer’s Day
4. World Suicide Prevention Day

Training:
1. Master in Psychiatric Nursing was started in the year 1995. The department continues to train graduate nurses to be a competent teachers, leaders and caregivers in the psychiatric nursing speciality. During the training, the Postgraduate psychiatric nursing students are given the opportunity to be a primary therapist for patients under the direct supervision of a Consultant for a period of 6 weeks.
2. Post Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing
The program was started in the year 1991. The programme prepares nurses with specialized knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive nursing care to patients with psychiatric disorders and be a mentor for novice nurses in psychiatric nursing.
