The Medical Surgical Specialty VII Nursing comprises of Neuro wards, Neuro ICUs, S ward, S extension Q1E wards. There are a total of six wards, three ICUS and one High Dependency Unit. The total bed strength is around 146 general ward beds, 16 Neuro ICU beds, and 12 high dependency unit beds.  The department has 3 Nurse Managers and a tutor, both undergraduate and post graduate students gain clinical experience. The department caters to patients with Neurological Disorders and medical problems. The Department is currently headed by Ms. Mercy J, Professor. 

SERVICES

Adults and children with Neurosurgical and Neuro medical conditions are managed and a comprehensive nursing care is provided. The Neuro ICUs cater to patients during the first 24 hours post operatively,  and  also patients with neuro medical problems for emergency stabilization or long term ventilatory support. A step-down system of Neuro Trauma ward,  helps to provide a continuous and follow up care for patients till discharge. Hand Limb Reconstructive Surgery (HLRS) unit admits Adults and Children with problems of the upper limb. Hansen’s disease patients are admitted for ulcer management and reconstructive surgeries. There is a separate ward to admit and treat Pediatric neurology patients.

Brain Injury Clinic

A follow up OPD for Neuro Trauma patients on every Wednesday at 2 pm in PMR Building Ground Floor. Around 820 patients were reviewed from March 2021 to March 2022. Cognitive and Clinical assessments are done and health Education are given to patients and their families.

Cadaver Organ Transplant

The nursing staff have assisted a total of 5 Cadaver Organ Transplants from 30.01.2022 to 23.03.2022. Organs like liver, kidney, cornea and heart valves were retrieved and sent to different hospitals in Chennai as well as for patients in CMC.

Nurses actively take part assisting in the brain death protocol.
