Preamble
This short course is designed to prepare registered
nurses working in nephrology settings with
specialized knowledge, skills and competence in
providing Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) to patients with
End Stage Renal Disease. It is also aimed to equip
them to educate, train and counsel patients and care
givers on various aspects of Peritoneal Dialysis
Therapy.
The nurses through training can take up autonomous
roles as educators, facilitators and counsellors, thus
functioning as integral members of the PD team.
Objectives of the course: The course participants will be able to
- Relate the anatomy and physiology of kidneys to pathophysiology and management of Chronic Kidney Disease
- Understand the disease process, identify symptoms and manage patients with Chronic Kidney Disease.
- Interpret and draw inferences to relevant investigation findings
- Identify fluid, electrolyte and acid- base imbalances and intervene appropriately.
- Comprehend the principles and concepts of Peritoneal Dialysis with relation to anatomy and physiology of peritoneum
- Select and prepare patients and care givers for PD modality.
- Assess the patients before Peritoneal catheter insertion and while on PD therapy
- Assist efficiently for PD catheter insertion
- Develop competencies in procedures pertaining to peritoneal dialysis adhering to protocols and guidelines.
- Prevent, Identify and manage complications related to PD therapy
- Gain an overview of renal transplantation
- Provide comprehensive, evidence based and individualized nursing care to patients with CKD undergoing peritoneal dialysis therapy incorporating the acquired knowledge and skills
Eligibility:
Nurses with GNM, B.Sc or M.Sc qualification
Organization of Course
Duration: This is a short term course of 4 weeks duration(Onsite).
Total Hours: 4x 45 Hrs = 180Hrs
Theory Hours: 27 Hrs
Clinical Hours: 153 Hrs
