The BSc Nursing programme is designed to enable students to get a wider understanding of nursing based on scientific principles and clinical experience. The programme includes a 4 year course and one year training as junior staff nurse, and is organized into eight semesters. The programme embraces a competency-based and outcome-based curriculum and encompasses foundational, core, and elective courses. It is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai. Students have to appear for University examinations at the end of each semester during the course.

Over the first and second semesters, subjects covered include applied basic and behavioural sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Nutrition, Psychology, and Sociology), Nursing Foundations,  Communicative English, and Health Informatics. The third and fourth semesters focus mainly on Adult Health Nursing and specialities in Medical Surgical Nursing with integrated pathophysiology. Subjects like Applied Microbiology, Genetics, Professional values and Ethics, Pharmacology, and Pathology are also covered in these semesters. The fifth to seventh semesters include Child Health Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Introduction to Forensic Nursing, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Nursing, Nursing Education, Nursing Management and Leadership, and Nursing Research and Statistics. The eighth semester is a rotating internship in main clinical areas of nursing.

Eligibility for Admission

  1. Candidate should have passed the qualifying examination after a period of 12 years of study in Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany & Zoology) and English. Candidate must have obtained a minimum of 45% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology) and in English individually at the qualifying examination from any recognized board. There is 5 % relaxation for admission to all the SC / ST candidates.
  2. Candidates should have passed in all subjects of the qualifying examination of the Higher Secondary Certificate Examination (Academic) conducted by The Tamil Nadu State Board or any other equivalent examination in one and the same attempt in the subjects.
  3. The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years as on 31st December of the year in which admission is sought. The maximum age limit is 30 years and is relaxed up to 35 years for SC/ST candidates.
  4. Only unmarried women candidates are eligible to apply.
  5. Candidates should be medically fit.

Basis of Admission

1. Candidates are admitted once in a year. 
2. Selection is based on merit. Selection process involves Step I and Step II. Step I will be a Computer Based Test (see Annexure III of bulletin), conducted at 21 different cities across India. Short-listed candidates undergo Step II , which includes personal interviews and special tests to assess skills, attitudes, and other attributes for assessing candidates’ aptitude and interest towards the healing ministry. Their motivation and suitability to undertake the nursing programme in the Christian Medical College, Vellore are also assessed during Step II. For Christian students applying under the Minority Network category, a written test in Bible Knowledge will be part of the tests at Vellore during Step II. Admission to the programme for the year is subject to being found medically fit by the Medical Board of Christian Medical College, Vellore.

3. The decision of the Selection Committee is final. 

4. The number of candidates for the BSc Nursing programme shall be 100 per year and the distribution of seats will be as follows:

All India Open : 15 (including 3 for SC/ST)

Minority Network category and CMC Vellore Staff quota: 85

The candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Tribes (SC/ST) should indicate the information on the BSc Nursing application form and must enclose a photocopy of the certificate of proof issued by the Deputy Tahsildar or the District Magistrate. The original of this certificate is required at the time of registration for Step II.

5. Certification to the Minority Network Category: 

a. Certification to the Minority Network Category will be as per the guidelines provided in the Prospectus and Admissions Bulletin (check admissions.cmcvellore.ac.in). 
b. Undergraduate College Recommendation for Christians (UCRC) to the Minority Network Category: Christian candidates who are not certified to the Minority Network Category by the CMC Vellore Association or Council members may apply to be considered under the UCRC category. for this sponsorship. The UCRC certification will be as per guidelines provided in the Prospectus and Admissions Bulletin.
c. Applying for certification to the Minority Network Category does not guarantee the certification, selection to the programme, or financial assistance. No further correspondence regarding this will be entertained. Christian Medical College, Vellore has the right to post any of its Minority Network candidates to any department of the Christian Medical College at the discretion of the Dean, College of Nursing, based on the need.

6. Service obligation:
a. Service obligation for the candidates will be as per guidelines provided in the Prospectus and Admissions Bulletin.

b. All candidates admitted to the programme will have to undertake a service obligation to work in an area of need for a period of two years after completion.

c. Minority Network candidates may be transferred to serve all or part of their service obligation in some other mission hospital in India, if such a need arises.

d. The candidates chosen under the Open category will serve in areas of need identified by the Christian Medical College, Vellore. 

7. Admission to the programme for the year is subject to being found medically fit by the Medical Board of Christian Medical College, Vellore.

Registration for Admission
Candidates selected for admission into the programme will be required to register by paying the prescribed fee and completing other admission formalities. Submission of all original certificates is mandatory at the time of registration for the programme. Selected candidates must produce an Eligibility Certificate from the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai at the time of registration for admission. Admission to the programme will continue to be provisional until approved by The Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai.
