    • Started the nurses’ training program with lower grade nursing course that later upgraded to registered nurses training course which later prepared a ground for the University Nursing Training Program

 

    • First Nursing instructor and the first Nursing Superintendent

 

    • Drafted policies for nursing education in India.

 

 

 

 

Ms. Vera Pitman (1928-1961)

 


    • Made home visits to Kerala, Madras and Andhra Pradesh along with Ms. Houghton to motivate parents to send their daughters for nursing to CMC, Vellore

Ms. Florence Taylor(1944-)

 


    • Developed curriculum for the BSc Nursing course that was adopted by the University of Madras.

 

    • Prepared the revised syllabus for the certificate course that was adopted by the Indian Nursing Council.

 

    • Developing Public Health Training Programme for BSc Nurses.

Ms. Kathleen Norris (1946-

  • Dedicated public health nurse
  • Contributed extensively to the establishment and development of Community Health Nursing Department at CMC, Vellore.
  • Developed the home visiting programme in Thottapalayam and Kavanur and also the Red Cross centre at Vellore.

Dr. Pauline King(1955-

  • Popularly known as the “Protestant Mother Teresa” and fondly called as ‘Mummy’ by hundreds of children on the Family Village Farm near Vellore
  • King changed the lives of thousands of sick and abandoned in India.
  • Worked as a Professor in Community Health Nursing,
  • Performed innovative projects and research studies and also was a pioneer in the development of health education programmes.
  • Founded the Audio Visual Unit in CMC, Vellore where many leprosy survivors were economically rehabilitated.
  • She developed the idea of an independent nurse managed College of Nursing Community Health (CONCH) project in 1987.
  • For her commendable service to the community, she was honored with the India’s President Award in 1979.

 

 

 

Ms. Annamma Jacob

 


    • The first Indian Nursing Superintendent of CMC,

 

    • Joined the first batch of Diploma Nursing programme in 1932.

 

 

 

 

Dr. Anna Gupta

 


    • Belonged to the batch of 1939 Diploma Nursing programme,

 

    • Contributed extensively towards nursing education at CMC, Vellore.

 

    • Worked along with Ms. Taylor and helped in the management of student hostel, clinical teaching and admission process of nursing students.

 

 

 

Ms. Aleyamma Kuruvilla

 


    • The first Indian Dean of College of Nursing

 

    • With a Diploma in Nursing from CMC, Vellore, Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Indore and Master’s degree in Nursing Education from Columbia University, USA, she donned various roles in the College and nursing service.

 

    • Initiated one year Post Diploma programs in the College of Nursing to enable nurses to specialize in their field of expertise.

    • Contributed extensively to the development of Community Health Nursing department.

    • An alumna of 1947 batch of B.Sc Nursing,

 

    • Played a pivotal role in integrating nursing education and service in 1968.

 

    • Was enrolled as a member of Honour Society in Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau for her highest academic achievement in Masters in Nursing School Administration from Detroit

 

    • Instrumental in designing the surgical wards and the surgical intensive care unit (SICU),CMC, Vellore

 

    • An active leader at the state TNAI unit.

    • An alumna of the second batch of B.Sc Nursing (1947)

 

    • She helped in spearheading the institution at the time of major workforce crisis as the Deputy Nursing Superintendent.

 

    • Was instrumental in maintenance of laundry department and construction of new wards

 

    • Contributed to the development of the Maternity Nursing department.

 

 

 

 

 

Ms. Alice Jane David

 


    • 1948 batch of Diploma Nursing, completed her B.Sc Nursing form Queen’s University, Canada and Masters in Nursing Administration from Columbia University, USA.

 

    • As the Nursing superintendent, she initiated the Hospital Auxiliary training programme in CMC, Vellore

 

    • Instrumental in initiating prosthesis services for patients with breast cancer at CMC.

 

    • Known for her counselling skills, she closely worked with the Radiation therapy unit.

 

 

 

 

Mrs. Ann Sukumar

 


    • Completed B.Sc Nursing from CMC Vellore (1949) and Masters from Boston University (1958)

 

    • She was instrumental in designing the peadiatric block of CMC, Vellore.

 

 

 

Dr. Mrs. Kasthuri Sundar Rao

 


    • An alumnus of 1950 batch of B.Sc Nursing, she obtained her Masters in Community Health Nursing form UCLA, California.

 

    • She was the first graduate of College of Nursing to obtain doctorate in education from Columbia University.

 

    • Known for her commitment to Community Health Nursing, she contributed immensely for developing nursing standards for home care.
